Study Buddies

Study Buddies were formed in Olympia, Washington, sometime during 2005, between myself and two friends, Dylan Sharp and Carrie Keith. They play in Gun Outfit now. With futility, I've tried hyping up this recording to some small labels in hope of a retroactive release, but the flutter of interest proved naught. The above recording is from a 5 song CD-R recorded by Sam Staebler, and ltd. to about 35. They came with 4 x 6 photos of the Study Buddies, and a lyric insert.

We had about a dozen more songs which were never released, though many were recorded in other sessions. Today, I found a 11 song CD recording we did with Eli Moore, containing a few songs that never made it to the demo, but were staples of our live set.

An aside: several unfinished song ideas I had during the tail end of the Study Buddies became the genesis of the early Nodzzz repertoire. If anyone is interested in what that may sound like, tune back for a posting of the 2007 CD-R demo soon, if and when I get around to it.

Once-Nodzzz-drummer and Make-a-Mess records mastermind Eric Butterworth stopped by Sean's house yesterday to play on a song for our new LP, and it since occurred to me that a post here detailing his upcoming projects would be appropriate, partly because we're fans and also because we're dogs that never let go his Hang Ten sleeves. With the recent release of White Fence and Knight School LPs, and a Brilliant Colors single, the next record he's putting out will be a two song single by London's Proper Ornaments, (The songs are, I think, "Are You Going Blind" b/w "Recalling", both on the myspace). At Eric's Tiki Party this weekend, a few of us got into a lively discussion arguing whether the Ornaments roots lie in 90's indie-pop/electronic crossover ala Stereolab, or, as I argued, something more straightforwardly rock based, like a neo-Brit pop take on the similar engrained sixties idioms which Tim is re-imagining with White Fence and Darker My Love. But finally we reached no consensus. Either way, I'm thrilled for the next saga in the Make A Mess catalog, and if it's a limited release, be sure to pick it up. Before I go any further with cheap blog-type pontifications, I would like to add that the new Nodzzz LP will be called Innings, and we finished basic tracking yesterday. Innings because Sean and I listened to a lot of baseball radio while writing some of the songs, and I noticed recently that an early demo which Sean recorded in his room had faint traces of KNBR in the background. This was an accident which became a pattern for both of us, and now it's the yoke of the whole kit and boodle. More updates soon!

Nodzzz are lucky to be part of this month's upcoming Episcodisco at the Grace Cathedral, and here I'll note briefly what this event is for those unfamiliar. Local reverend and multimedia artist Bertie Pearson's monthly party is both a charity drive and collaborative curatorial art exhibit (with curating duo Paradise Now), utilizing the cathedral's exalted spaces for visual and video arts, and, of course, dancing. Amazingly, those attending this month will see an installation of one thousand flowers hanging from the church balcony by east bay artist Elizabeth Parks Kibbey, video projections from David Yun, and DJ sets from Jessica Beard and Melanie Ann Berlin of All Fall Down, a DJ duo who will further veil the evening in floral and jangly pop fabrics. Here's a nice piece that Jennifer Maerz wrote for the event on the SF Weekly website, if you're not yet convinced.

A New & Old Nodzzz Favorite

Pictured above is the Broken Strings LP, a little known treasure which came out in early 2008 and which I've only recently acquired. (I'm the last of the three Nodzzz to get a copy, and subsequently be obsessed with it). Adam Croce is the one man behind Broken Strings and was a Bay Area resident before he relocated to Olympia, Washington. There he's doing similar music projects and possibly milling around with a boom box. (He was the last time I was there.) Anyway, this LP (recorded sometime in 2006) and the trove of other unreleased stuff by Adam is deep pop of the highest caliber. Dynamic, strange and just stunning Summer-spent-in-the-bedroom type of songwriting. Unfortunately, I don't know the current status of the LP. It was released on True Panther Sounds in a limited edition of 300. But it should (and hopefully will) proliferate in numbers a hundred times that. Similar bands have let loose a song/band aesthetic which sings through a fog of Californian sprawl, boredom and surf-myth, but I don't think any of them have laid it out as beautifully as Adam has with Broken Strings. You can buy the new Nodzzz 12" now all over the place. Othermusic.com is selling digital versions for only 6.99, and you can order a hardcopy online from places like Bistro Distro, Goner Records, etc. My personal employer Amoeba Music in Berkeley has an embarrassing amount too. The only people that don't seem to have it is the band, really. But that should be fixed soon, thanks to these helpful people.

We no longer have the limited tour edition of the 12" for sale. Thanks to those savvy enough to order some while they were available. May they arrive in a beautiful, punctual fashion. The real deal version will be available for the string of west coast shows we are playing with Love Is All and Vivian Girls in mid-November. The San Francisco show is on November 20th at Bottom of the Hill, following an interesting weekend in Los Angeles, where Nodzzz will open a bill for an eclectic set of bands for the Part Time Punks festival on November 16th. A Note About the Tour Cancellation

We've spent the last week here in San Francisco, and not on the road as we had planned, because of an unexpected passing close in the family. Priorities have become the health and well being of our friends and family, and for this reason we've cancelled tour.

We were excited for the many great shows on tour (See previous post), and are looking forward to getting back in the swing of things later in the month. Thanks to those who booked shows, and were supportive given the sudden situation. It helped. Feel free to write us with remarks, or questions. Or you can wait until we see you later, sometime.

A Closer Look at These Exotic Venues.

Many of the venues we are playing on this upcoming tour have exotic and mysterious names. Some bear historical references, others an otherworldly association. Here is a selection:

The Edinburgh Castle. (8/29). This San Francisco drinking establishment has been around for over 50 years. Regally decorated amid a rustic, wooden interior, the Castle is aptly named for its unpopularity among the peasantry (by which it is entirely surrounded), and its dedicated service to the elite upper class of artists and musicians. Bosoms here are big and boasted; DJs are fed grapes and wear green Jester tights.

Broken Neck Warehouse. (9/4). Hardly a vague designation for a show space. This is a storage space for broken necks. "Broken Neck" could be Texas slang for something more benign, like an empty bottle of beer. Doubtful. With the theme of beer and Texas we also have the following:

Beerland. (9/5). I picture an enchanted beer garden different from those found at outdoor rock festivals, those unsightly places peppered with brash fashions and disposable red cups. None of that here. At Beerland, everyone looks and behaves like Pig Champion or Randy Turner. Smiling clouds chase you around like in Mario Brothers video games.

Asterisk. (9/12). Asterisk: a mark to reference a notation or omitted information. An object resembling a star. I don't know much about this Brooklyn show space other than what I saw on their Myspace page. There were photos of the Fall, Brian Chippendale, Wrangler Brutes, etc. The name of the club dryly references its extraordinary vibe.

The Golden West Cafe. (9/15). This cafe sounds like a novelty shop one would find off Route 1 on the way to Big Sur, or, if you substituted "cafe" with "casino", a very conventional sounding Indian place for gambling. But the Golden West Cafe is actually in Baltimore, and remains a curiosity.

The Love Garden. (9/20) Being a young person, a name like Love Garden will have no shortage of instant dizzying associations. Opium flowers, female dwarfs, iced cold tea. Love Garden conveys a sense of southern hospitality and sunshine, which will be so welcome this far into the tour.

The Lion's Lair. (9/21). Our final show will be in Denver, and it will be a spectacle. Afterwards, we'll hit the bath houses to congratulate ourselves and reflect on a tour well done. One last night in punk band fantasy land, before work and real life catches up with Nodzzz again.

Fare Thee Well, San Francisco

We're going on tour. And to mark this occasion, a new 12" mini-LP will be coming out on the niche-punk label What's Your Rupture?

We thought about calling the album Songs In Lieu Of Total Brains or Fare Thee Well, San Francisco, but opted for the more enigmatic Self Titled 12" mini LP at 45 RPM. Ten songs: four re-recorded from the 2007 demo-CDR, and six new ones.

A pre-press version limited to 100 copies will be available for tour. I'll post the dates here when they become complete. (By the way, that week long residency we were planning for the Hamptons has fell through, in its stead we're playing Manhattan & Williamsburg. Oh! Just added! Special student orientation gigs at Oberlin and SUNY Purchase. Both shows with the Freshman Fifteen.)
